1.
From the 4th to 10th of July 2011, the XVI. International "Carl Filtsch" Competition for performing
and composing piano music will take place in Sibiu-Hermannstadt/Romania.
The competition festival is dedicated to the memory of this exceptional Transylvanian musician
who was born in 1830 in Sebes-Alba-Mühlbach (Transylvania) and died in Venice in 1845.

2. Young musicians from all over the world are invited to participate in this international meeting
of young pianists and composers. The competition will be organised for three age groups:

A. born after the 27th of May 1999
B. born between May 27th, 1995 and May 26th, 1999
C. born between May 27th, 1980 and May 26th, 1995

3. Apart from the performing competition the jury will award prizes for the best own piano compositions.

4. COMPETITION PROGRAMME

Participants in category A and B will be required to play in only one round.

Category A:

The total repertoire should take between 10 and 15 minutes.
The programme must comprise works from the following three categories:

a) a polyphonic piece (pieces) of the baroque period
b) one of the following three compositions by Carl Filtsch: Romanza, Andante op.2 nr.1, Barcarolle or three preludes from
"Six small preludes"
c) one or more works at free choice of the candidate

Optional: one or more own compositions that will be included in the maximum playing time
and have a minimum duration of two minutes.

Category B:

The total repertoire should take between 20 and 25 minutes.
The programme must comprise works from the following three categories:

a) a polyphonic piece (pieces) of the baroque period
b) one of the following three compositions by Carl Filtsch: Mazurka, Adagio in c minor ("Adieu"), Notturno op.2 nr.2 or Notturno op.14 in c sharp major
c) one or more works at free choice of the candidate

Optional: one or more own compositions that will be included in the maximum playing time
and have a minimum duration of three minutes.

Category C:

The competition in Category C will take place in two rounds: In the first round the total repertoire should take between
15 and 20 minutes and pieces from the following three categories must be presented:

a) a prelude and fugue from the Well-tempered Clavier, Book I or II of J. S. Bach
b) two etudes from opus 10 or opus 25 of Chopin (not opus 25, No. 7)
c) one of the following three compositions by Carl Filtsch: Impromptu in B flat minor,
Impromptu in G flat major, Introduction and Variations in A major (only the theme and variations are to be played), Etude op.8 in
F major or Etude op.10 in A major

Optional: one or more own compositions that will be included in the maximum playing time
and have a minimum duration of three minutes.

In the second round (repertoire duration of 25 to 30 minutes) the following repertoire is required:

a) a movement in sonata form from a sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
b) one or more pieces from the Romantic period
c) one or more impressionist or contemporary pieces

5. All pieces in all age categories are to be played from memory. The music of the entire programme, including
own compositions, must be submitted to the jury for review.

7. First-prize winners of previous editions of Carl Filtsch competitions cannot participate
in the same group anymore.

8. The jury reserves the right not to award prizes or to divide them among candidates
within the different categories.

Prizewinners are obliged to participate in the prizewinner’s concerts,
otherwise they will lose their right to the prize awarded.

In addition to the enclosed application form, the following items must also be sent:

- certificate of birth (or photocopy of the relevant page of the passport)
- exact description of the programme, including the duration of the individual pieces

The participation fee for candidates from Romania is 100 lei.
The fee for candidates from other countries is 30 €.
This fee must be paid at the secretariate of the competition on the 4th of July 2011
between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. and is not refundable.

10. With the application the candidate is bound to the regulations of the competition.

11. All participants should present themselves at the secretariate of the competition on the 4th of July 2011 
in order to determine the order of auditions by lot.

12. All auditions are public and will take place at the headquarters of the State Philharmonic of Sibiu.
The prizes will be awarded at the prize winners’ concert.

13. The jury is made up of internationally recognized pianists and composers.

14.
Practice rooms: throughout the duration of the competition, candidates may practise
in the rooms of the Music School as well as the Art School between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

15. Carl Filtsch (1830-1845) was born near Sibiu - Hermannstadt. At the age of 12, he was Chopin’s
favourite student and already one of the most famous piano virtuosos of his age – comparable to Liszt and Thalberg.

16. ACCOMMODATION

The organizers will pay the overnight costs of the first 30 registered candidates.
